Synopsis This study is the first of its kind which presents a comprehensive survey of Buddhism in all the States of South India-Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Pondicherry and Tamil Nadu. After a brief account of the life and teachings of the Buddha, the discussion moves on to the question whether the Blessed one had sanctified the soil of South India. This is followed by Asoka’s role in making Buddhism a living religion in South India. The subsequent five chapters trace the march of Buddhism in individual states. For better appreciation of the events, each chapter has been divided into five parts: royal patronage, saints and scholars, sites and shrines, the Buddhist legacy and the revival movement.
