Yang Anand. Crime and criminality in British India. Tucson, The University Of Arizona Press, 1985.
The study of historical crime is still at an incipient stage. A rapidly growing body of research, particularly on Europe and North America, however, has begun to appropriate it into the mainstream of social history. The criminal theme has been mobilized especially as a vehicle to pursue the rich and subtle pasts of ordinary people and ordinary lives. The subject has also lent itself to an exploration of the contextual definitions of crime, thereby providing new and probing approaches to the analysis of mentalités, and the nature of law, authority and power, as well as their institutional manifestations in, and effects on, society.
