There are many assumptions commonly used in topology optimization for structural design. These assumptions include pursuing a unique, globally optimal solution-the 'best' design; conducting optimization within a predefined design domain, under prescribed load conditions and predetermined support conditions; and focusing on structural performance without considering aesthetic preferences of the designer or client. This book challenges conventional assumptions in structural topology optimization. Through a systematic discussion and numerous examples, we demonstrate that these assumptions are not only unnecessary but also impose severe limitations on design freedom and hinder creativity in structural design.
